Overview

Brightstar is seeking a motivated Firmware Engineering Intern to join our Retail Channel Platform Firmware team for the summer. This internship offers hands-on experience working on real-world embedded systems that power Lottery Point‑of‑Sale terminals and kiosks used in production environments.

You will collaborate closely with experienced firmware and software engineers and gain exposure to the full product development lifecycle, including hardware, embedded Linux, diagnostics, compliance, and device testing. This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in embedded systems, low‑level programming, and platform engineering.

This role reports to the Senior Manager, Lottery Platform Engineering and is onsite at our West Greenwich, Rhode Island location.

Responsibilities

  • As a Firmware Engineering Intern, you will contribute to active development efforts while building practical engineering skills:
  • Integrate static and dynamic code analysis tools into the firmware development workflow
  • Enhance and maintain automated test tools for device APIs
  • Implement new features for production diagnostics applications used on deployed devices
  • Assist with the design and validation of new device interfaces
  • Collaborate with firmware, hardware, QA, compliance, and test teams
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and other engineering tasks as needed
  • You will work on production code and tools, not just sample projects.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
  • Programming experience in C and/or C++
  • Familiarity with Linux-based systems
  • Strong attention to detail and problem‑solving skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Well-organized with clear written and verbal communication
  • Available to work 37.5 hours per week during the summer
  • Ability to work onsite in West Greenwich, RI

At Brightstar, we consider a wide range of factors in determining compensation, including background, skills, experience, and work location. These factors can cause your compensation to vary. The estimated starting compensation range is $43,680 - $46,800. The actual pay offered may end up being higher or lower. The Company will comply with all local pay requirements and collective bargaining agreements, where applicable.

 

Base pay is only one part of our Total Rewards program.  Sales roles may be eligible for commission payments, while other roles are eligible for discretionary bonuses.  In addition, we offer employees a 401(k) Savings Plan with Company contributions, health, dental, and vision insurance, life, accident, and disability insurance, tuition reimbursement, paid time off, wellness programs, and identity theft insurance.
