Role Overview
We are looking for an experienced Director of Software Engineering to lead the engineering organization responsible for the development, scalability, and long-term evolution of one of business-critical products within BrightStar’s lottery technology portfolio.
This role combines strategic technology leadership, people management, product delivery ownership, and strong cross-functional collaboration. The successful candidate will be accountable for building and leading high-performing engineering teams, driving predictable delivery of the product roadmap, ensuring technical excellence, and partnering closely with Product, Architecture, Delivery, Operations, Security, and senior business stakeholders.
Responsibilities

Lead end-to-end engineering function (development, QA, DevOps, operations)

Define and execute engineering strategy aligned with product and business goals

Build and manage high-performing teams (Engineering Managers, Tech Leads, Engineers, QA)

Partner with Product to translate business needs into scalable solutions

Oversee planning, estimation, dependencies, and release governance

Identify and remove delivery bottlenecks
-
Track and improve metrics (cycle time, defects, reliability, performance, team health)

Balance feature delivery with technical debt, modernization, and stability

Lead architectural direction and engineering standards

Drive cloud-native, modular, and scalable platform design

Ensure systems are secure, resilient, maintainable, and observable

Promote modern practices (CI/CD, DevOps, automated testing, observability)

Align with Architecture, Security, Cloud, and Operations teams

Improve software quality, incident prevention, and root-cause analysis

Ensure compliance with security, data protection, and regulatory requirements

Act as key engineering partner for Product, Operations, Sales, and leadership

Communicate plans, risks, trade-offs, and progress clearly

Support customer discussions requiring senior technical expertise

Collaborate across global and distributed teams

Contribute to strategic planning, budgeting, and prioritization

Define engineering organization structure for current and future needs

Qualifications
- 10–15+ years of experience in software engineering, including strong background in product-oriented development
- At least 5 years leading engineering teams, including managers, tech leads, or multi-team structures
- Experience in senior leadership roles such as Director of Engineering, Head of Engineering, Senior Engineering Manager, or VP Engineering
- Proven track record of delivering complex, scalable, reliable, and secure software products or platforms
- Strong knowledge of modern software architecture, SDLC, agile delivery, DevOps, CI/CD, and test automation
- Experience managing engineering delivery in product organizations (e.g., SaaS, fintech, gaming/lottery, ticketing, e-commerce, payments, enterprise software, or high-volume transactional systems)
- Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure
- Hands-on experience with microservices, APIs, distributed systems, event-driven architecture, or real-time processing
- Ability to make sound technical and prioritization decisions in complex, ambiguous environments
- Strong people leadership skills, including coaching, performance management, and organizational design
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, including working with executive leadership
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, IT, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
- Master’s or MBA is a plusBased in Warsaw, Poland, with required on-site presence (hybrid model)
